The event featured presentations on Chhaya’s ongoing projects, including their innovative Gaushala for injured cows and horses and the comprehensive CNVR (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) program that sees around 200 dogs neutered each month.

Highlighting the support received from the community, Mr. Utsav Parekh and Mr. R. Chamaria, who were instrumental in the establishment and expansion of the hospital, were recognized for their contributions. Large Silent Brain Tumor Manifested after a spinal anesthesia given for a uterus removal surgery slipping the patient to a coma state

Chennai, July 7, 2024: MGM Healthcare proudly announces a landmark achievement in medical history with the successful completion of a critical brain tumor in the skull base surgery on a 51-year-old woman from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This groundbreaking procedure highlights our commitment to advancing medical science and providing exceptional patient care.

The complex and timely surgery was performed by a team of neurosurgeons under the guidance of Dr. Roopesh Kumar, Director of Neurosurgery at MGM Healthcare, along with Dr. L. S. Harishchandra and Dr. Saranyan, both consultants in neurosurgery at MGM Healthcare, and Dr. Arulvelan, Neuro Anesthetist, MGM Healthcare. The patient, Ms. Sheela (name changed), was airlifted from a private hospital in Andaman to MGM Healthcare, Chennai, in an unconscious state.

Ms. Sheela was unaware of the large, 8 cm brain tumor of the skull base, which came to light after she underwent a uterus removal surgery for a separate issue. The doctors in Andaman had performed the surgery using spinal anesthesia, which was successful, but the change in the brain fluid dynamics following spinal anesthesia caused a sudden increase in brain pressure, which led to brain herniation and coma. 

Within two days of the uterus removal surgery, Ms. Sheela became very drowsy and unresponsive. The doctors in Andaman and Nicobar Islands performed a brain scan, which revealed the large brain tumor inside her skull. Concerned for her condition, Ms. Sheela's family approached the neurosurgery team at MGM Healthcare for further consultation. The doctors immediately recommended airlifting her from Andaman to Chennai for brain tumor removal surgery.

Upon arrival, the neurosurgery department decided to go ahead with an emergency brain tumour removal surgery, which was the only option to save the patient’s life. Dr. Roopesh Kumar and team performed the surgery using a complex skull-based approach, successfully removing the 8 cm tumor involving major blood channels on the right side of the brain while preserving the surrounding vessels.

Dr. Roopesh Kumar shared his thoughts on the surgery: "This case presented significant complexities due to the tumor's size, requiring meticulous planning and precision under the background of a decompensated brain pressure. Utilizing advanced surgical techniques and state-of-the-art technologies, we achieved remarkable accuracy in targeting and excising the tumor completely. The patient's right side of the brain was swollen and pushed over the left side due to large edema, making it a life-threatening situation. Her timely arrival saved her life; even a one-day delay could have been fatal. The patient's recovery has been promising, reflecting the efficacy of our approach. This case underscores the importance of continual advancements in neurosurgery and the dedication of our medical team. We are optimistic about the patient's future and committed to supporting her ongoing recovery."

Ms. Sheela was discharged on her fifth postoperative day and is advised to stay in Chennai for another week for observation before flying back to Andaman. Her family thanked the doctors and MGM Healthcare management for providing timely state-of-the-art healthcare facilities.

Doctors at Apollo Cancer Centre perform Robotic -Assisted Surgery to remove a massive 1.13 kg Adrenal tumour; Middle aged man with high BMI gets a new life

Chennai: Apollo Cancer Centre, one of the top super speciality hospitals in India, performed a robot-assisted surgery to remove an extremely large adrenal myelolipoma (a non-cancerous tumour of the adrenal gland) measuring 18 cm and weighing over a kilogram to save a 49-year-old male patient. This complex robot-assisted surgery was performed by Dr. Ragavan N, Senior Consultant in Uro-Oncology, and his team from Apollo Cancer Centre using the da Vinci Xi robotic platform by Intuitive.

The patient was diagnosed with a large adrenal tumour, 18 cm in size, significantly larger than the average tumour, which typically measures 5 to 7 cm. Unlike standard cases, where an adrenal tumour sits on top of the kidney, this tumour encroached behind the right kidney, compressing the IVC (Inferior Vena Cava), as well as a significant part of the liver. The pre-operative workup indicated that the tumour was likely a myelolipoma. The doctors at Apollo Cancer Centre decided to proceed with robot-assisted adrenalectomy due to the significant risks posed by the size and position of the tumour.

Commenting on the complexity of this case, Dr. Ragavan N, Senior Consultant in Uro-Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centre, said, “In open surgery, handling such a large tumour can pose significant challenges. The soft and fragile nature of adrenal tumours, especially myelolipoma, which is composed of fat cells, can increase the risk of rupturing the tumour during manipulation. Even though the pre-operative evaluation suggested a myelolipoma, we were concerned about the probability of malignancy. Any rupture of the tumour (especially if it was malignant) could have led to metastasis (spread of cancer cells). Therefore, the decision to perform robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci system was crucial because of the dexterity, precision, and stability offered by the robotic arms, which enhanced our ability to lift and remove the tumour safely without causing any rupture.”

Expressing his gratitude, the 49-year-old patient said, “I’m extremely thankful to Dr. Ragavan N and the medical team at Apollo Cancer Centre who assisted him during the surgery. They counselled me about the benefits and risks of undergoing robot-assisted surgery and executed the surgery to remove the tumour safely without any complications. Without their support and care, I would not have recovered so quickly and returned to my normal life sooner than I expected.”

Dr. Ragavan N further elaborated, “Considering how obese the patient was (110 kg), the complex position and large size of the tumour, open surgery would have posed immense challenges. Removing such a large tumour would have required a 25 - 30 cm incision, which would have significantly impacted wound healing and recovery time, increasing the risk of developing a hernia. Locating the adrenal vein, a very critical yet extremely small structure, would have been extremely difficult in this case owing to the enormous size of the tumour. The minimally invasive nature of robot-assisted surgery with its 3D vision and dexterity made it easier for us to navigate through the challenges and perform the surgery. The enhanced precision and control offered by robot-assisted surgery minimize the risk and improve patient outcomes.”

Today, the Board of Directors of Akzo Nobel India Limited, a leading paints and coatings company and maker of Dulux Paints, approved the financial results for the first quarter ended 30 June 2024. 

Highlights Q1 FY25 (compared with Q1 FY24)

Revenue from operations at ₹1036.3 crore, up 4% 

EBIT from operations at ₹147.1 crore, up 3% 

PAT at ₹114.6 crore, up 4%

Highest-ever absolute performance across revenue, gross margin, EBIT and PAT

“In the first quarter, we continued to deliver double-digit volume growth across our operating verticals driven primarily by B2B. 

Our gross margins expanded due to cost initiatives and sourcing efficiencies. We continued to invest in our brands and growth initiatives. These resulted in sustained double-digit profitability. We see an increase in the raw material costs in the second half of the fiscal. As a result, we are taking necessary pricing actions without losing competitiveness.
