Triumph Over Sarcoma: Over 200 participants pedal the 3rd Edition of 'Winners on Wheels' Cyclothon
The 5-km cyclothon re-ignites hope and raises awareness on Sarcoma
Chennai, August 03, 2024: In a powerful display of solidarity and support, Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC), Apollo Cancer Centres (ACC) and Apollo Shine hosted the third edition of the Winners on Wheels Cyclothon. The event was aimed at raising awareness about sarcoma and inspire hope for improved quality of life after treatment. Sarcoma, a rare and often misunderstood cancer, predominantly affects children. By bringing cancer survivors, healthcare professionals and cycling enthusiasts together, the Cyclothon celebrated the indomitable human spirit and highlighted the importance of awareness and support for sarcoma.
The event flagged-off by the Honble Thiru Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Minister for School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu and Mr. Harshad Reddy, Director of Group Oncology & International at Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Limited (AHEL), attracted an enthusiastic crowd of over 200 participants. Among them were sarcoma survivors, school students, doctors and medical staff, all united in their endeavour to dispel cancer myths and honour the unbreakable human spirit.
The Honble Thiru Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Minister for School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, while expressing his admiration for this social cause initiative, commented "I applaud Apollo team for their tireless efforts in raising awareness about Sarcoma cancer through the Winners on Wheels Cyclothon. The 3rd edition, which comprised a 5-km Cyclothon, was flagged-off at APCC to spread the powerful message that "There is Life Beyond Cancer" and there is no challenge that can deter cancer warriors from achieving their goals. The inspiring event showcased sarcoma survivors leading the charge, symbolizing the unwavering strength and determination of those battling cancer.
Dr Vishnu Ramanujan, Consultant- Orthopaedic Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centres, said, Sarcoma cancer is a complex and formidable one, and it requires a multi-disciplinary approach to tackle its unique challenges. Having witnessed the saddening impact it poses on patients and their families, I believe, it demands personalized care, multi-modal treatment approach, counselling and unwavering support. The first step boils down to raising awareness and breaking the myths surrounding this cancer. Through the Winners on Wheels Cyclothon, we aim to break the silence surrounding sarcoma and provide a platform for survivors to share their inspiring stories of courage.”
Speaking at the event, Mr. Harshad Reddy, Director Group Oncology & International, AHEL, emphasized, “Winners on Wheels is more than just a cyclothon - it's a symbol of hope and triumph over cancer. Witnessing the determination and resilience of the cancer survivors and the enthusiasm of the young participants was truly inspiring. We are on wheels busting myths and showcasing that life beyond cancer is possible. We are not just raising awareness, but also nurturing a sense of togetherness and empowerment.
The Cyclothon commenced early in the morning with participants embarking on a scenic route that symbolized their journey of overcoming cancer. The event was filled with energy and a sense of community, underscoring the message that together we can conquer cancer.
The 'Winners on Wheels' Cyclothon concluded with a ceremony honouring the sarcoma winners, who were celebrated not just for their participation but also for their relentless fight against cancer.
