Signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with bus operators in the state to accelerate the EV transition in the heavy vehicle segment.

Chennai, December 1, 2024: SUN Mobility, the leading provider of energy infrastructure and services for electric vehicles (EVs), today showcased India’s first modular battery-swapping technology for Heavy Electric Vehicles (HEVs) at an event in Chennai. Over 100 private bus operators and operator associations from across Tamil Nadu attended the event. 

SUN Mobility in partnership with Veera Vahana, a leading bus manufacturer recently showcased the fully integrated mobility solution designed to electrify bus and truck fleets at Prawaas 4.0, an international conference organized by the Bus & Car Operators Confederation of India (BOCI). The technology solution underscores the dire need to electrify commercial fleets, especially heavy vehicles, which is crucial for cutting emissions, improving air quality, and boosting the overall efficiency of the transportation sector. This event attracted more than 10,000 enquiries for buses and the subsequent workshop was focused on bus operators in Tamil Nadu. In the workshop, details of SUN Mobility’s offering and cost benefit analysis were highlighted. Further, how the solution meets the bus operators’ expectation of switching over to cleaner fuels at similar cost structure and refueling experience as their existing diesel operated buses was also discussed. 

During the event SUN Mobility signed MOUs with several leading bus operators in the region, emphasising the game-changing potential of battery-swapping technology in heavy-duty vehicle electrification.

"SUN Mobility has transformed HEVs by addressing key challenges faced by bus operators, including high ownership costs, limited financing options, prolonged downtime due to lengthy charging, and the burden of deploying charging infrastructure. Our modular swapping technology offers a practical, cost-effective solution that boosts efficiency and lowers operational costs for operators,” said Ashok Agarwal, CEO- HEV, SUN Mobility. 

Battery swapping will bring down the upfront cost of the buses by 40%, making it comparable to the upfront cost of traditional ICE buses and this coupled with easy access to financing will break the entry barrier for adoption of EVs by fleet owners. Further, it reduces operational costs of fleet operators by up to 20%, while increasing uptime and higher utilization of buses owing to the swift swapping process of under three minutes. In Tamil Nadu, mofussil operations have a unique use-case with very high trip frequency with buses doing 6 to 8 trips in a 1 day (16 hours of operations), where buses plying in a route have 2-10 minutes of gap between them. Such operations will not be possible with fixed battery vehicles which has at least 3 hours of charging required. Battery swapping can provide the right solution for these operations. The compact and light form factor of the battery ensures higher payload-carrying capacities.

Today, buses and trucks form about 5% of the total vehicle population but contribute about 50% of the tailpipe emissions. 90% of the commercial vehicles segment is privately owned and given the cost sensitivity of this sector, battery swapping can facilitate EV adoption and play a vital role in democratising the adoption of electric buses.

Chennai – Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG ("Daimler Truck"), today announced the market launch of the BharatBenz heavy-duty truck (HDT) range equipped with the globally-proven 12-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) by bagging the first order of 80 units 3532CM mining tippers to a single customer. BharatBenz, known for its highly capable construction and mining heavy-duty range, strengthened its product portfolio by adding ‘Torqshift’ to the mix. 

Named as ‘Torqshift’ for the BharatBenz range, the 12-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) has earned its stripes globally in hundreds of thousands of Mercedes-Benz trucks. Known for making driving easy, the transmission will be available in the latest BharatBenz models including the 4032T, 5532TS, 5532T, 2832CM, and the flagship model 3532CM.

November, 2024: Tata Asset Management today announced the launch of the Tata BSE Business Group Index Fund, a new investment opportunity designed to provide investors with exposure to India's leading conglomerates. The fund opened for subscription on November 25, 2024, and closes on December 9, 2024.

The Tata BSE Select Business Group Index Fund tracks the BSE Select Business Groups index, comprising companies from seven of India’s largest business groups. These conglomerates span 19 diverse industries, reflecting central themes of India’s economic growth. The fund will include 30 companies from key sectors driving India's future growth, with the financial services sector excluded to focus on other industries. 

 The seven business groups included in the fund are Tata Group, Reliance Industries, Adani Group, Aditya Birla Group, L&T, Jindal Group, and Mahindra Group. The weightage for each group is capped at 23% based on their free-float market capitalization.

He added that " investors could benefit from the power 7 were in the top conglomerates which power the growth story will be a part of the index and one could benefit from a portfolio which is very diversified across sectors while still being with the top 7 business groups."

India’s growing economy, with a GDP surpassing USD 3.7 trillion, has positioned the nation as the fifth-largest economy globally. With the government's ambition to become the third-largest economy by 2028, these conglomerates are expected to play a critical role in achieving that goal.

“The business groups’ diversified operations, technological advancements, and strong market presence position them as key contributors to the nation's economic aspirations. By investing in this fund, investors can gain exposure to these dynamic companies and participate in India's economic success,” added Vardarajan.

Through this fund, investors can get exposure to new-age/up-coming growth-oriented sectors like electric vehicles and battery technology, green energy and smart cities, AI and quantum computing and defense and aerospace, among others. 

The Tata BSE Select Business Group Index Fund is open-ended and available for both subscription and redemption. The weightage for each group is capped at 23% based on their free-float market capitalization. Currently, the Tata Group has a weightage of 22.7%, Reliance Industries at 22.3%, and L&T Group at 15%. 

Index Methodology

The index methodology of the Tata BSE Business Group Index Fund comprises a maximum of 30 stocks, representing companies within the largest 7 business groups in India. The largest company is based on the 6-month average free-float market capitalization from every group. The next 23 companies are ranked based on 6-month average free-float market capitalization and included in the index.

Patil, Hon'ble Minister for Large and Medium Industries, concluded a series of impactful meetings on Monday with industry leaders during his visit to Chennai. These discussions aimed to explore investment opportunities, foster strategic partnerships, and strengthen Karnataka’s position as a hub for innovation-driven industries.Key industry participants included senior representatives from companies such as Swelect, Visteon, MacDermid Alpha, Syrma SGS, Salcomp, Amphenol, Nokia, Tube Investments of India Limited, EID Parry, TAFE, Rane Group, Sanmar Group, Ashok Leyland, and Wheels India Limited. The meetings focused on fostering investment and expansion opportunities in Karnataka and invited participation in the upcoming Invest Karnataka 2025 Global Investors' Meet.

Key Discussion Areas

Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM):

Leaders from the ESDM sector emphasized the need for creating a robust ecosystem in Karnataka, focusing on PCB manufacturing and display technologies. The government highlighted the ongoing development of the Kochenahalli ESDM cluster in Mysuru as an ideal location for these investments. Skill development initiatives tailored to the sector’s needs were also discussed to support its rapid expansion.

Pharma and Chemicals:

Tube Investments and Sanmar Group shared plans to expand operations in high-growth sectors such as pharmaceuticals and chemicals. Karnataka’s proposed pharma cluster near Bengaluru, equipped with centralized Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs), was presented as a significant opportunity for these industries.

Electric Vehicles (EVs):

Discussions with Ashok Leyland focused on investments in EV manufacturing, including battery production and alternative fuel R&D. Karnataka’s EV-friendly policies and infrastructure support were highlighted as enablers for the company’s ambitious growth plans.

Automotive and Aerospace:

Companies such as TAFE and Sanmar Group emphasized the need for innovation-driven collaboration in the automotive and aerospace sectors. The government proposed strategic locations, including Dharwad and Adhinarayanahosahalli, for expansions in these industries, citing logistical and operational advantages.

Talent Retention and Social Infrastructure:

Several leaders underscored the importance of creating conducive environments for talent retention. Suggestions included developing industrial townships with robust social amenities such as schools and hospitals to attract and sustain a skilled workforce.

The meetings reaffirmed Karnataka’s commitment to providing tailored support to industries, including assistance with ideation, approvals, and infrastructure readiness. Companies such as Rane Group and Wheels India expressed strong interest in expanding their operations in Karnataka, with Rane proposing a substantial investment of over ₹1,000 crore.

The roadshow in Chennai not only strengthened Karnataka’s industrial partnerships but also paved the way for meaningful collaborations at Invest Karnataka 2025. The government’s efforts are poised to drive sustainable development and position Karnataka as a leader in India’s economic growth trajectory.
