INTRODUCTION

National Association For The Blind Tamil Nadu State Branch NAB-TNSB has completed 64 years of service for persons with visual impairment. We work in areas of eye care, early intervention, inclusive education, vocational training, Employment, leisure, awareness and advocacy.

As a part of our awareness program, we observe Hellen Keller’s Day.

Helen Keller Day is celebrated annually on June 27th to commemorate the birth of Helen Keller. The day is dedicated to honouring her life and achievements.

Helen Keller (1880-1968) was an American author, political activist, and lecturer who became deaf and blind at a young age due to illness. She primarily used home signs until the age of seven, when she met her first teacher and life-long companion Anne Sullivan. Sullivan taught Keller language, including reading and writing. She went on to graduate from Radcliffe College, becoming the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Keller campaigned for women's suffrage, labour rights, and world peace.

She was a lifelong advocate for people with disabilities, writing and speaking extensively on their behalf and inspiring millions worldwide.

There are provisions that make access (physical access and access to information and communication) in the RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES ACT 2016.Website content accessibility guidelines (WCA)has clear specifications for an accessible website. Despite these measures most websites are still inaccessible. So, launch of accessible website by NAB-TNSB gains great significance.

We believe that right to quality education of every child with/without disability should be protected. We promote education both through working with inclusive schools and supporting special schools.

Teachers play a pivotal role in preparing students to shape their future. As Helen Keller said, "True teaching cannot be learned from text-books any more than a surgeon can acquire his skill by reading about surgery.”There can be no better day than Hellen Keller day to celebrate and acknowledge the impactful contribution of special teachers. NAB-TNSBwill be honouring 3 of the special teachers who go beyond textbooks and continue to be a part of many a students journey as guides and mentors.

Achievements in higher secondary board exams is indeed a milestone. On this very significant day, NAB-TNSB will be felicitating 6 students from government and private special schools for their outstanding academic performance.

By celebrating Helen Keller Day, we honour her legacy and reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable world for all.
