As summer heats up, cases of conjunctivitis—commonly referred to as Madras Eye—are seeing a sharp rise across Tamil Nadu, affecting people of all age groups, from children to adults.

This highly contagious eye infection is primarily caused by adenoviruses or bacterial infections, and it spreads quickly in densely populated areas through eye fluids

How Does Madras Eye Spread?

The infection is often a result of poor hygiene and low immunity, and it spreads rapidly in public places, schools, and crowded areas.

Transmission occurs primarily through:

Close contact with an infected person

Sharing clothes, medicines, or personal items

Touching contaminated surfaces after an infected person touches their eyes and then it spreads by contact

It is important to note that simply looking into the eyes of an infected person does not spread the disease.

Here are the preventive measures you can follow to prevent the spread of Madras Eye infection.

Avoid touching your eyes frequently

Wash hands regularly with soap and water

Wear protective glasses.

Avoid using contact lenses during infection

Do not share towels, handkerchiefs, or eye medications

Symptoms of Madras Eye

Those affected may experience redness, irritation, and swelling in the eyes. And particularly soon after waking up, eyelids stick together because of sticky discharge.

In severe cases, when the cornea is affected, symptoms can progress to blurred vision or even temporary vision loss.

Treatment and Recovery

If you experience any of the above symptoms, it is crucial to consult an ophthalmologist immediately. Treatment generally involves medicated eye drops, which are prescribed based on the severity of the infection.

Self-medication is not advised; as inappropriate use of eye drops can worsen the condition.

Dr. Suganya highlights the importance of:

Following a nutritious diet to boost immunity

Wiping the eyes gently with a clean cloth

Wearing dark-colored sunglasses for comfort and protection

When the recommended precautions and treatment are followed, Madras Eye usually cures within seven days.
