Apollo Proton Cancer Centre Successfully Performs Indias First Endoscopic Mastectomy With Reconstruction

Chennai, 27th January 2025  Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC), has achieved a significant milestone by performing Indias first Endoscopic Mastectomy with Reconstruction on a 46-year-old breast cancer patient. This revolutionary procedure marks a new era in breast cancer treatment, combining effective cancer removal with new surgical innovation to ensure enhanced cosmetic outcomes and faster recovery.

The patient, Ms. Ramya (name changed), a 46- year-old woman, faced one of the most challenging moments of her life when she was diagnosed with early breast cancer. The diagnosis brought a whirlwind of emotions  fear and uncertainty about her future, and the changes it might bring to her body and identity. Like many women in her situation, she struggled with the thought of losing her breast.

Initially advised to undergo a mastectomy due to her ineligibility for breast conservation surgery, Ms. Ramya was determined to explore options that could help her feel herself. She was keen on a whole breast reconstruction but needed guidance to understand the possibilities. During her consultation with Dr. Manjula Rao, she found not only expert advice but also empathy and hope. Dr. Manjula carefully explained the innovative option of an Endoscopic Mastectomy with Reconstruction of the breast. This minimally invasive procedure offered her the dual benefit of effectively treating the cancer while preserving the natural appearance of her breast. Ms. Ramya understood and took the bold decision that marked a turning point in her life, replacing fear with confidence and hope.

This approach allowed for the removal of the cancerous tissue while preserving the nipple and areola (the area of dark-colored skin on the breast that surrounds the nipple), enabling a more natural-looking reconstruction and improved aesthetic outcomes.

Minimal access breast surgery, such as endoscopic mastectomy, is a cutting-edge procedure offering significant cosmetic and recovery benefits. During the surgery, the tissue beneath the nipple is tested on the spot for cancer cells and if it is detected, the nipple will be removed to ensure complete treatment.

Dr. Manjula Rao, Consultant – Breast Oncoplastic Surgery, said, The execution of the Endoscopic Mastectomy with Reconstruction has been highly satisfying, and I am delighted to see the patient's swift recovery. It is not just a medical achievement; its a step forward in how we approach breast cancer treatment. The focus is on treating the cancer effectively while addressing the emotional and aesthetic concerns of our patients.

The novelty of this case was that the mastectomy was performed by 'Endoscopic' means. This is a minimally invasive technique, wherein, removal of the cancer tissue is done through a small incision hidden in the breast creases. This technique offers quick recovery with minimal pain and improved cosmesis while treating the cancer. This is yet another advancement/option in Minimally Invasive Breast Surgery (MIBS) allowing women suffering from breast cancer to benefit from surgical advancements in treatment.

Ms. Ramya, the cancer winner, said, "I was worried about losing a part of myself to cancer, but this procedure has given me hope and confidence. Im grateful to the doctor and the entire team at Apollo for their care and expertise."

Mr Dinesh Madhavan, President-Group Oncology and International, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd (AHEL), said: The introduction of Indias first Endoscopic Mastectomy with

Reconstruction reflects our unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence in cancer care. The pioneering technique not only ensures effective cancer treatment but also addresses the emotional and cosmetic needs of patients, restoring their confidence and hope. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally, with over 2.3 million new cases reported annually (WHO).

This, the first-of-its-kind procedure in India, underscores the importance of personalised care, showcasing how advancements in medical technology can address both the physical and emotional needs of cancer patients.
